Kavanot for the Ten-Word Blessing

A practical guide for the kavanot (intentions) and shefa (divine energy) flow during the recitation of the standard ten-word blessing, specifically focusing on the Chanukah candle lighting blessing.

I. Preparation:

Before beginning, center yourself and focus your intention on connecting with the Divine. This is the most important part - be mindful of and desire fervently what you want to accomplish with the blessing.

II. The First Six Words (General Blessing):

These initial words establish a connection to the highest spiritual realms and initiate the downward flow of shefa. Visualize each step vividly, holding the intention of drawing divine light into the world.

  1. Barukh (ברוך - Blessing): Keter/Chochma. Head: Center and Up.

    • Shefa Flow: Boundless light from Ein Sof cascades through Keter Elyon into Atzilut, dividing into streams flowing into Atik Yomin (primordial wisdom) and Arikh Anpin (unfolding attributes). These carry the shefa of MAH (42-letter name, associated with Chesed) and BEN (52-letter name, associated with Gevurah) into Abba (Wisdom) and Imma (Understanding)'s yesod (foundation) in Atzilut. This initiates creation. Nefesh, Ruach, and Neshama of Havaya (YHVH) descend, enlivening subtle bodies. This initial expansion also sets the stage for tikkun by creating a vessel capable of receiving and integrating fragmented holiness.
    • Visual Aid: Brilliant white light descending, splitting into gold (Chesed) and silver (Gevurah) streams, flowing into Abba and Imma.
  2. Atah (אתה - You): Chesed. Head: Right and Slightly Up.

    • Shefa Flow: From unified Abba and Imma, shefa flows, carrying AS'MaB (combining YHVH aspects) and five Hasadim into Imma's inner yesod (womb), where three "Ehyehs" (I AM) reside. The five Gevurot join, balancing kindness and judgment, crucial for tikkun as it integrates both expansive and contractive forces. This dynamic interplay allows for the refinement and purification of the descending shefa.
    • Visual Aid: Warm rose light (Chesed) flowing into Imma's yesod, surrounded by balanced rose and violet (Gevurah).
  3. Adonai (אדני - My Lord): Tiferet. Head: Center.

    • Shefa Flow: Intend Havaya-Adnoot (uniting transcendence and immanence). MAH's shefa flows into Z.A.'s central column (Da'at, Tiferet, Yesod), energizing "Tzelemei Mohin" (auric brains, related to the partzufim - divine personas - within Z.A.). This central column acts as a conduit for the balanced shefa, facilitating its integration and further descent.
    • Visual Aid: Golden light flowing into Z.A.'s central pillar, illuminating the head.
  4. Eloheinu (אלהינו - Our G'd): Gevurah. Head: Left and Slightly Up.

    • Shefa Flow: Connect to Z.A.'s left column (Binah, Gevurah, Hod), associated with Elohim (emphasizing form and judgment). SAG's shefa flows here, balancing MAH's flow into the central column. This balance is essential for tikkun, ensuring the shefa is not overly harsh or overly permissive.
    • Visual Aid: Silvery-blue light (Gevurah) flowing into Z.A.'s left side, balancing the central gold.
  5. Melekh (מלך - King): Netzach. Head: Right and Slightly Down.

    • Shefa Flow & Tikkun: "King" signifies sovereignty and initiates the upward return flow. The descending shefa ascends, carrying "RaFaH Nitzotzin" (288 sparks)—fragmented holiness from "broken vessels." This upward movement is tikkun, liberating and reintegrating sparks. This stage reflects the concept of Teshuva (return), a key element in tikkun.
    • Visual Aid: Gold and silver lights, now with sparkling points, rising.
  6. Haolam (העולם - The World): Yesod. Head: Up and Slightly Left.

    • Shefa Flow: Purified, elevated shefa, carrying redeemed sparks, descends, now potentiated for manifestation in the physical world (Asiyah). This descent, following the ascent of tikkun, represents a renewed and strengthened flow of divine energy.
    • Visual Aid: Brighter light, with integrated sparks, descending.

III. Chanukah-Specific Words (Expanded):

  1. Asher (אשר - Who): Netzach. Head: Right and Down.

    • Shefa Flow: Rectified shefa prepares in Yasot and Tevunah's Yesod and Malkhut, poised for descent into the specific context of Chanukah. This is the bridge between the general and specific tikkun of the holiday.
    • Visual Aid: Descending light concentrating above the candles.
  2. Kidshanu (קדשנו - Sanctified Us): Hod. Head: Left.

    • Shefa Flow: Z.A. receives shefa carrying NaRaNHaY of Chochma, sanctifying him for transmitting the light specifically for Chanukah. This sanctification prepares the "vessel" (Z.A.) for the specific tikkun associated with the holiday.
    • Visual Aid: Light flowing into a brighter Z.A.
  3. B'mitzvotav (במצותיו - With His Commandments): Tiferet. Head: Center and Slightly Up.

    • Shefa Flow: Binah's "Tzelemei Mohin," carrying Binah's NaRaNHaY, descend, imbuing Z.A. with understanding of the mitzvah's specific tikkun. The Chanukah lights represent the rekindling of spiritual light and overcoming darkness, a core theme of tikkun.
    • Visual Aid: Light from Z.A.'s head flowing toward candles.
  4. V'tzivanu (וצונו - And Commanded Us): Yesod. Head: Down.

    • Shefa Flow: VaQ's "Tzelemei Mohin," with their NaRaNHaY, descend, empowering Z.A. to transmit shefa into the candle-lighting. This completes the shefa flow, connecting spiritual realms to the physical act, enacting the tikkun associated with Chanukah.
    • Visual Aid: Intense light from Z.A.'s hands igniting candles with spiritual fire.
