The 51 days of repentance close with a single profound secret. Hoshana Rabba is the exact moment the heavenly contract is handed to the angels. But before that final delivery happens at dawn, we have one last window to sweeten the forces of strict justice.
Rav David Touitou chlita explains that the "sod" (secret) of this day revolves entirely around the Aravah (willow branch) and its power to clear blocked spiritual channels.
The Sod of the Five Strikes
In Kabbalah, there are five severe forces of strict justice in the upper worlds. These correspond to the five final letters of the Hebrew alphabet (Mem, Nun, Tzadi, Peh, Khaf). When these forces are active, they block blessings from coming down.
The Aravah is the key to sweetening this rigor. The leaves resemble human lips. We often use our speech poorly to gossip or harm others, which fuels strict justice. By taking five willow branches and striking them on the ground five times, you actively nullify these five forces. It is like telling an angry person to calm down five times in a row. The striking clears the blocked channels right before the verdict is finalized.
To activate this secret, HKBH requires one specific trait: pure humility. The willow has no taste and no smell. It represents a person with no deep Torah study and no great deeds. This person only brings a simple, humble heart. HKBH values the simple person who looks at the sky and just says they love Him. That raw humility is the ultimate weapon against strict judgment.
Delivering the Contract
Think of Rosh Hashanah as reading a contract. Yom Kippur is signing that contract. Hoshana Rabba is the day the contract is actually delivered. A signed contract sitting on a desk does nothing until it is handed over to the other party. The actions you take during this day and night determine the final state of that delivery.
Actions for the Night
- Read Sefer Devarim: Read the entire Book of Deuteronomy. It is the greatest book of ethics we possess. It warns against forgetting HKBH in times of wealth and reminds us of His love and justice. Both men and women can read it.
- Study Torah: Stay up and listen to Torah classes until dawn. All topics of study are permitted after finishing Devarim.
- Maintain Discipline: Avoid idle talk, joking, or discussing vain things. Your behavior tonight sets the tone for your whole year. Act with discipline to invite a gentle year.
- Immerse in the Mikveh: You can go to the mikveh during the night for spiritual purity.
Actions for the Day
- Circle the Bimah: During the morning prayers (Shacharit), circle the Torah reading table seven times. These circuits represent the seven days of creation and draw down divine protection to transform past repairs into concrete blessings.
- Strike the Aravot: Take five willow branches and strike them directly on the ground five times. Women do not need to strike them on the bare floor.
- Keep the Branches: Do not throw the beaten branches away. Keep them in your car, carry them on you, or leave them in your home. They serve as a protection to keep negative forces away.
