Rav Touitou on Sukkot 5787: The Festival the Nations Cannot Copy

Neither the post nor the notes have been reviewed by Rav Touitou chlita.

Sukkot is the festival the nations neither copied nor understood. It is the intimacy of the honor that HKBH wanted to give only to Israel. Yom Kippur says: I forgive you. Sukkot says: come into My arms. Until Hoshanah Rabbah the angels have not yet come down with the file.

If you sit in the sukkah because Hashem asked, when the house is cooler and the citron has no price, you have already answered the nations. He has already opened His arms. Stay there until Hoshanah Rabbah. Let the angels come down and find you inside.

1. A festival that is not for the nations

Rav Touitou opens on the question he prepared with pleasure for this chag. Sukkot was neither copied nor understood by the nations of the world. The manna, even leftover manna, and the well of Miriam were gifts a stranger could have come and taken, as with Shavuot. Sukkot is the honor HKBH wanted to give only to the children of Israel.

The mashal is a couple in their room. A very good friend knocks and asks: « Est-ce que je peux rentrer dans la chambre ? » The answer: « Non, nous sommes dans notre intimité. Ferme la porte. »

That is why, as brought in the Kaf HaChaim, one does not invite a non-Jew into the sukkah. It is not because one does not love him. If he enters on his own, he may enter. One does not invite him. An exception: a caregiver for an elderly person, the Filipina or Indian aide so common in Israel, is not a guest. She is there to help. She may enter. Aside from that, one does not do it. The sukkah is a specific intimacy between Israel, be'ezrat HKBH, and the Creator of the world.

Do not invite a non-Jew into the sukkah (Kaf HaChaim). A caregiver who is present to assist may remain. Ask your rav for edge cases. Before you invite, ask whether this person is a guest in HKBH's room, or a helper who must be there.

2. Judgment is always a comparison

Thirty days of selichot. Rosh Hashanah. To judge a person you need a measure, and a measure is always a comparison. In a weak class, a mediocre student looks like the best. In a city of engineers, genius has a different face. In Bnei Brak, where everyone is learning Torah, you cannot pretend. You are put in your place in two seconds.

The Rav tells of a rich father with a wonderful daughter. He goes to a yeshiva of four thousand talmidim and asks for the best boy. They present Yitzchak. The shidduch is made. The boy leaves the yeshiva, becomes the rav of his father-in-law's city, and is given a villa, a driver, the conditions of a rich man. After two or three years the Torah is no longer the same. The father-in-law says: « Tu sais pourquoi je t'ai choisi parmi 4000 élèves ? » He takes him back to the yeshiva and asks for a mivchan. The boy is no longer at the page. « Tu vois, tu as commis une erreur mon gendre, tu t'es comparé à des gens moyens. De là où tu as grandi, de là où tu as pris la Torah, est-ce que tu constates que tu as vraiment chuté ? » The son-in-law does teshuvah, returns to learning, and founds a kollel in the city.

A side mussar the Rav will not skip: in our generation people call their in-laws by first name. In the tradition it is aba and imma. It is assur. It is a matter of respect.

The point of the mashal: on Rosh Hashanah, who stands on the other pan of the scale? The nations of the world. Israel is judged compared to the nations.

Honor for parents and in-laws is kibbud. First names for mechutanim are not the derech of this house.

3. Two fathers, two pardons

We are judged on Rosh Hashanah. We are pardoned on Yom Kippur. The question is what kind of pardon. Does it mean we pay nothing further, or are we pardoned on condition we do not return to the aveirot?

One father says to his son: « Je te pardonne mon fils, maintenant on va réparer la voiture avec ton argent. » Another father says: « Je te pardonne, mon fils, l'accident que tu m'as fait avec la voiture. Viens dans mes bras. » « Viens dans mes bras » means he is not even asking for the repair.

Sukkot is the arms of HKBH.

All the festivals of Tishrei hang on Sukkot. We have been judged, but the angels have not yet come down with the judicial file for the year, for better or for worse. On the seventh day, Hoshanah Rabbah, the angels descend on the thirty days, on the two days of Rosh Hashanah, and on Yom Kippur. Without Sukkot the judgment cannot be fully abolished or defined. Are we really the victors after Yom Kippur, our sins set against the sins of the nations?

If there was debauchery among Jews, it is extremely grave. » So we are measured against them.

Hoshanah Rabbah is still Sukkot. Eat in the sukkah. The simcha of the chag remains. The aravot of the day carry the weight of the sealing of the verdict. When you sit in the sukkah, say: HKBH, I am here because You opened Your arms.

4. What the angels of the seventy nations say

The nations watch the Jews. The angels of the seventy nations say: « Maître du monde, tu prétends être un Dieu de justice. »

First answer: HKBH judges in the present, as with Yishmael. What is he now? Not what he will be tomorrow. As long as he has not sinned, do not break My ears.

Then HKBH says: it is true My children do not have a knife to the throat when they go to a nightclub, when they applaud in a theater that mocks the handicapped. Nobody forces them. Why do they go? Light pushes back darkness. The deeper the darkness, the more the light shrinks. »

Israel has almost 90% free will. The nations have barely 5%. They have seven Noahide laws. Keep them and you are called the righteous of the nations, and you have a share in the World to Come. Israel has 613. One does not tell a goy: you must love your neighbor as yourself. That mitzvah is not theirs. A Jew has a neighbor who is unpleasant, who talks all the time, who has no sukkah. It is a mitzvah to invite him into your sukkah. You will say: « Je ne le supporte pas. » You still have no right not to love him. A goy with another goy does not have that mitzvah. HKBH will not wait for him to love. We have lo tisna et achicha bilvavecha. Our life is hard. To whom did HKBH say you shall not speak lashon hara? To us, because we love talking about one another. To whom did He say do not look at the women? To us. We cannot watch incestuous screens. We cannot assimilate to the culture of the nations. We eat strictly kosher. Here you may go, here you may not. The salary of a kiff is immediate. Dopamine dances.

HKBH says to the nations: it is true My children were not forced into sin. Who influenced them? You. Did you not also have a duty to keep morality, not to be debauched? Is incest not forbidden to you? Look what you made of it. You influence the world. My children have a pure soul. They let themselves be influenced by you. If you had kept what I asked of you as non-Jews, My children would all be in Torah and mitzvot.

The nations answer: they still have free will. If they learned more Torah and had more yirat Shamayim, even our influence would not make them fall. Why do You give them such a salary in the World to Come? Why do You say they are all tzaddikim?

Ahavat Yisrael includes the Jew you cannot stand. Invite him to the sukkah. Lashon hara is evidence the angels use.

5. The first day of sins, and of proof

HKBH says: listen well. On the first they will go out, small and great, with the arba'at ha-minim, their lulavim in their hands. The festival of Sukkot does not fall on the first of Tishrei. That is Rosh Hashanah. It falls on the 15th. So what is « the first »? The first day of sins. At Yom Kippur we are pardoned. From Yom Kippur until Sukkot we are occupied, morally and physically, with Torah and mitzvot: learning the laws, building the sukkah, choosing the four species. We do not really have time to sin. From the moment we are in the sukkah: do not speak chol in the sukkah. Honor the festival.

Among us, thousands of Jews assimilated to the culture of the nations, against the verse not to assimilate. Now HKBH says to the nations: you who speak about My children, look at this festival.

Sukkot is absolutely illogical. Imagine I show you a well-made citron and I say it costs 200 euros. Two hundred euros for a citron? What would I do with it? What is its value on the market? None. Before Sukkot, none. How long is Sukkot? Seven days. After Sukkot, how much can I resell it for? Nothing. Nobody wants it. In Israel you see crates of etrogim by the garbage. The festival is over; it is worth nothing. You will pay that money for the children and for yourselves, for the lulav, the hadassim, the aravot. Why do you buy this? Because HKBH asks it.

There are people who will pay 7,000 euros for a special Yemenite etrog, perfect. People used to sell a house to buy one. HKBH says: look at them on the first day of Sukkot. They all come with the four species. The nations scratch their heads. They do not understand why one would buy this. It has no value. They do it because I ask them. The true nature of the Jew comes out on Sukkot. His soul comes out on Sukkot.

Take the arba'at ha-minim on the first day as the mitzvah. After the chag they have no market value. Do not treat them with contempt; they have finished their work.

6. Three motions to fetch the neshama

One of the secrets of why we take the species and go forward and back three times: to go fetch our neshama. Nefesh. Not four times, not five. Three. One, two, three. Then we turn in the six directions, up and down. Why? To say to HKBH: it is true we may have assimilated, it is true we may have fallen, but the true nature of our soul remains attached to Your tradition. If not for the influence of the nations, Israel would all be in Torah and mitzvot, perhaps not in perfect harmony, but more or less.

Thanks to Sukkot, HKBH can now close Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur as open files, for Hoshanah Rabbah, the seventh day, when the nations present themselves. HKBH says: you still have something to say? There is a house behind, with the armchair, everything is fine. Where is the man? On a balcony, with the schach above, baruch HKBH. The Rav says: we were eighty people in this sukkah. Why am I here? It is a bit hot. We put fans. Inside you are quiet, you rest. Why don't you go inside? Because HKBH asks me to be here. And what does it change to HKBH whether you are here or there? This is the festival where HKBH wanted to honor us.

Take a real psychiatrist, a man with a wide, universal philosophy. Bring him to a synagogue on Sukkot. He goes mad. Bring him on Hoshanah Rabbah in the morning. He sees men with branches in their arms, they do this, they turn, they make seven circuits around the bimah with a Torah in the middle. » You cannot understand. It is not even at the level of ordinary emunah. It is the level that says: the soul of the Jew obeys HKBH even where the mind no longer understands at all. We do not try to understand. HKBH asks, we do it. All the more so the mitzvot you do understand: tefillin, Shabbat, kashrut.

Whoever claims to be a Jew and wants to show his strength should know: the days of Sukkot are the true advocates of all the festivals we just passed, Rosh Hashanah and Kippur, which remained suspended until Hoshanah Rabbah. HKBH says: you still have something to say against My children? You see, when they leave assimilation, they enter the sukkot of HKBH, they take the lulav in their hands, and they come to say: « Regardez, mon âme, elle est pure, elle est propre. » Then you have something to say? It is enough that he is inside walls of temporary canvas for Israel to unveil its true nature.

The na'anuim are a received minhag of the taking: six directions, with the three forward-and-back motions as practiced. Hoshanah Rabbah: seven hakafot. Stay in the sukkah even when the house is more comfortable.

7. Zechariah's paradox, and the kick

There is something nifla in Zechariah chapter 14, read as the haftarah: this shall be the sin of Egypt and the sin of all the nations that did not go up to keep the festival of Sukkot. It is a paradox. On one side they are not concerned by the festival. On the other we offer the seventy korbanot for the seventy nations, and we reproach them for not coming to Sukkot.

They cannot accept the idea of the sukkah.

The Gemara in Avodah Zarah says that at the end of days the nations will say to HKBH: You gave Israel Moshe Rabbeinu, You gave them mitzvot. Do not be jealous. I will give you a small mitzvah, the mitzvah of the sukkah. HKBH will take the sun out of its context, out of its bubble of gas. It will become extremely hot. The nations will leave, giving a kick. One who suffers in the sukkah may leave. Why the kick? If they had gone out without kicking, it could have counted. They kicked. The kick means: we understand nothing, these mitzvot are stupid. You must not mix linen and wool. You must not mix milk and meat. You must not touch your wife for weeks because of her cycle. « Attends, vous êtes fous les juifs. » A Jew who eats neveila and one who eats treif: it is strictly forbidden, yet it is a shechitah, it looks the same. No. It is not the same. Not the same points, not the same shechitah, not the same knife. He does not know the berachah. All of that plays. We want to say: what does it change, this or that, it is the same according to the human mind.

The sukkah is the brain that nullifies itself. So we say to HKBH: my heart, my spine, my eyes, and my mouth are Yours. We bring them before HKBH. The thoughts of my heart belong to You: that is the etrog. My spine walks straight before You: the lulav. My eyes see only You: the hadassim. My mouth wants only to praise Your Name: the aravot.

That is why the nations who did not go up to keep Sukkot are punished. How can they not have gone up? They cannot even enter the sukkah. They do not even accept the idea of the sukkah. And that idea is what saves us from all the decrees of the year, and lets us be certain, be'ezrat HKBH, that we have won, that we were pardoned at Yom Kippur. Because HKBH takes us in His arms, in the walls of the sukkah, to say: not only have I pardoned your faults. You no longer owe them to Me.

One who is in real tza'ar in the sukkah (heavy rain, genuine distress) may leave. A kick of contempt is a different act. The next time a mitzvah looks illogical, do not kick. Sit down.

8. The counters at zero, and the only way not to sin

It is a pity to begin again the faults for which you have already paid. HKBH did what had to be done. You proved that in the absolute it was not your fault: bishgagah, we sinned by human stupidity, by weakness, by lack of knowledge or fear of Heaven. HKBH says: do not forget one detail. I have reset the accounts to zero. Do not add debts and debts now. I am tired of seeing you suffer, because all your sufferings come from your falls.

The Rav closes with this sentence: if one wants not to sin in life, one must learn to be happy in this world. When one is happy in this world, one has no reason to look for adrenaline elsewhere.

Ve'samachta be'chagecha. Simcha is a mitzvah of the chag. A Jew who is sameach in the sukkah is not looking for a nightclub. Do one thing in the sukkah today whose only purpose is joy: a song, a guest, a blessing said slowly. That is how the counters stay at zero.

Conclusion

Sukkot is the festival the nations cannot copy, because it is a closed room. Yom Kippur pardons. Sukkot embraces. The angels wait until Hoshanah Rabbah. The etrog that will be trash next week is, this week, the neshama held up in front of seventy accusing angels. Three motions fetch what assimilation buried. The brain nullifies itself. The heart, the spine, the eyes, and the mouth are handed over. HKBH says: the debt is cancelled. Do not open a new one. Be happy here, and you will not need to be happy somewhere else.

  1. Opening and dedication. »

  2. The festival the nations did not copy. »

  3. The closed room (Kaf HaChaim). »

  4. Judgment by comparison. »

  5. The yeshiva son-in-law. De là où tu as grandi, de là où tu as pris la Torah, est-ce que tu constates que tu as vraiment chuté ?" [...] »

  6. Two fathers.

  8. The seventy angels. Quand tu kiffes, tu kiffes. La dopamine, elle danse. »

  9. The etrog of 200 euros. »

  10. Na'anuim and the psychiatrist. On attend Hoshanah Rabbah. [...] »

  11. Zechariah 14 and Avodah Zarah. « Zekhariah chapitre 14 [...] »

  12. The hug and the last sentence. »
