אִם יִרְצֶה הַשֵּׁם
Parachat Beha’alotkha • Bamidbar 10:29
In this week’s sedrah Moshe Rabbeinu turns to his father-in-law Yisro and says:
נֹסְעִים אֲנַחְנוּ אֶל הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר אָמַר ה׳
We are traveling toward the place that Hashem said, ‘This I will give to you.’
Moshe wasn’t just talking about the Midbar. He was giving us the master key to Jewish history, and to our own lives.
The Bnei Yisroel didn’t just wander for forty years. They were traveling through the world on the way to Olam Haba. Bavel, Spain, Poland, Russia, America, Flatbush, now wherever we are — every stop was arranged עַל פִּי ה׳.
Not accidents. Not punishments. Opportunities.
Every place we land is a new anvil where Hakadosh Baruch Hu hammers us into something stronger. Bavel gave us the Talmud. Spain gave us the Rishonim. Germany gave us Rashi. Poland gave us the Chassidic masters. And every single stop whispered the same invitation to the nations:
“לְכָה אִתָּנוּ Come with us if you want the real good.”
Because the real destination isn’t Eretz Yisroel.
Eretz Yisroel still has sickness and death.
Our final stop is Olam Haba the place where every Jew has a guaranteed חֵלֶק (Sanhedrin 90a). That’s the kulo tov Hashem promised.
The same system runs inside every single Jew.
You don’t stay in one stage forever. You’re a child… then a teenager… then a spouse… then a parent… then middle-aged… then a zeide… then old age… and finally the last stop.
Every single stage is a nisayon a test designed to pull out the gold buried inside you.
- Childhood Your parents are still alive. The mitzvah of kibud av v’eim is right in front of you every single day. Use it or lose it forever.
- Teen years The fire of avodas Hashem is easiest to kindle now. Rav Yisroel Salanter said all his yiras Shamayim came by 18. Don’t waste the kindling.
- Marriage Your spouse is the ultimate character-refiner. Two different people forced to live in one house. Every time you bite your tongue instead of answering back you just got stronger.
- Children עֵת לָטַעַת. You’re planting eternity. Every mitzvah your kids do later is your mitzvah.
- Middle age Binah kicks in. Now you finally understand what you only heard when you were young. Use the clarity.
- Old age The day is short and the work is great. This is when you perfect your davening, watch your mouth, and cling to Hashem with everything left.
- The final moments Even death is a masah. The man who can say “I love You, Hashem” while his soul is being taken — that’s the one who understood the whole journey.
The Secret
הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה דּוֹמֶה לִפְרוֹזְדוֹר בִּפְנֵי הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא (Avos 4:16).
Right now you are sitting in the lobby.
The banquet hall is waiting.
Every place you’ve ever lived, every age you’ve ever been, every circumstance you’re in right now was custom-designed by Hashem to get you ready for the main event.
What’s On the Itinerary
This week, bli neder, I will:

Spend at least one minute every single day reminding myself out loud:
“I am traveling to Olam Haba. This stop is for my perfection.” -
Write down two specific ways I can use my current life stage (whatever it is right now) to grow and actually do one of them before Shabbos.
That’s it. Two minutes a day.
Because the one who knows he’s traveling… travels differently.
